  3. There are from 6800 to 6900 distinct languages in the modern world. Most popular languages in the world are: Мandarin Chinese it is spoken by 880 million people, Spanish it is spoken by 320 million people and English it is spoken by 315-380 million people. There are some interesting facts about languages: K. David Harrison, a linguist from the Swarthmore College, predicts that by 2050 about 90% of spoken languages will be dead, esperanto is the most popular artificial language, the number of speakers of English in China is larger than in the USA. UNESCO advocates for mother tongue instruction in a bilingual or multilingual education approach in the early years because of its importance in creating a strong foundation for learning: the use mother tongue with young children at home or in pre-school prepares them for the smooth acquisition of literacy in their mother tongue and eventually, the acquisition of the second (perhaps national) language at a later stage in their schooling.
UNESCO defines bilingual and multilingual education as “ the use of two or more languages as mediums of instruction. The Organization adopted the term ‘multilingual education’ in 1999 to refer to the use of at least three languages in education: the mother tongue; a regional or national language and an international language.

The most widely spoken languages are :
    Mandarin Chinese- about 880 million
    Spanish -about 325 million
    English about 315-380 million
    Arabic about 205-425 million

    K. David Harrison, a linguist from the Swarthmore College, predicts that by 2050 about 90% of spoken languages will be dead. However, UNESCO takes a lot of actions to conserve languages. UNESCO support the idea to teach pupils all over the world in their mother tongue . Later on it will be much easier for pupils to learn foreign languages. The importance of mother tongue instruction in the early years of schooling is emphasized in the findings of studies, research and reports such as the annual UNESCO EFA Global Monitoring Report.
